I used to run this all the time. It’s fun to watch. But every function raises an error. I’m being told I put things out of orderr. How can I put this in a better order? This is an unmodified Adafruit Arduino example sketch.

Here’s the errror:

the code contains declarations like this

but implementations like that

In C/C++ declaration and implementation must have the same signature, i.e. in this special case alter the declaration to

void testdrawline();

(the other methods have to be treated analogous) and the errors should vanish.

Not quite. The functions are defined (the body of the function is there), but the functions have not been declared (the prototype that tells the compiler the function exists before it’s used for the first time). This is because the Arduino IDE preprocessor does a lot of hand-holding, and promotes bad C++ coding. One such instance is failure to write function declarations/prototypes. Hence why the compiler is saying ‘hey, you haven’t declared a function called testdrawline() yet… what am I supposed to do?’. Since, in the case of the first error, it has only gotten to line 69 of the code, it doesn’t know the function defined further down at line 107.

Try putting the function declarations in, just above void setup()

void testdrawline();
void testdrawrect();
void testfillrect();
void testdrawcircle();
void testfillcircle();
void testdrawroundrect();
void testfillroundrect();
void testdrawtriangle();
void testfilltriangle();
void testdrawchar();
void testdrawstyles();
void testscrolltext();
void testdrawbitmap();
void testanimate(const uint8_t *bitmap, uint8_t w, uint8_t h);

@pfeerick is right, same issue as here.

Yes - @pfeerick you’re right.

This morning I obviously got a little bit confused by the (originally) unformated source and followed the wrong track :frowning:

2 Likes

Yeah, I hate that too… can be downright confusing when reading code the forum software has mangled because someone hasn’t formatted the code as… code! :laughing:

#include <Arduino.h> is missing. Is this the first time running the sketch in PIO?

Thank you. That wasn’t it, but I got it.
