Why is my serial monitor only running in the terminal now?

Using Platformio extension for VS Code. My monitor used to look like the top image, but now it only runs in the terminal window (lower image):

I have tried creating new projects, uninstalling and reinstalling platformio.

The upper serial monitor was never included in PlatformIO. Looks like a custom extension.
