Using PIO both from CLI and ide?

Sorry for the very basic question: I installed Platform IO through Visual code (PlatformIO-IDE) on Mac OSX but I would like to be able to use it also outside visual code; in the latter case platformio is not found, I can only run platformio in CLI from visual code terminal, not from my regular shell.
is there a recommended way to do this ? Thanks
