Me too, just installed PlatformIO extension for the first time, tried to login via GitHub but browser does not pop up no matter what (just in case tried to change default system browser, but it did not help)

recommended solution:
Please re-test with pio upgrade --dev and restart the VSCode.
if the creates an error (as on my PC). extecute the command recommended in that error message from a windows cmd prompt.
That worked fine for me.
The PlatformIO Core 6.1.18 is out! Please upgrade to the stable version via pio upgrade command.
