Hello there,
When I click on the PlatformIO icon on the left hand side of the window I stumble upon the PLATFORMIO: QUICK ACCESS panel,
A prompt says “Initializing PlatformIO Core…” and the program hangs indefinitely.
Any ideas will be greatly appreciated.

If you haven’t done any custom modifications to your PlatformIO installation, I would just suggest a clean reinstall: Delete C:\Useres\<user>\.platformio completely and restart VSCode.
If this still hangs up, let us know.
How do.you find and delete the .platformio file if one. Is using Linux?
