How to install ver. 1.7.1 on VS CODE for Windows 7?

I’ve been using PIO ver. 1.7.1 for several months now but today something happened that blow off the extension from the VS CODE environment…
After a blackout I restarted my Windows 7 PC and when VS CODE was up and running again, the PIO extension was gone!!
Since the PC operating system is W7 I can NOT install the latest 3.3.4 version of PIO but the older one 1.7.1 that is the last one that support W7…
I can NOT remember how I did it the first time and now I’m wasting a lot of time surfing on the net to find some useful infos that I still have not found…
Any help?
Thanks in advance
Alberto

I’m sorry but I did a BIG MESS!!
PLATFORMIO has nothing to do with the version of windows and is by any mean responsible for what I’m not able to achieve…
The problem was VSCODE which MUST be in the ver. 1.70.2 in order to run on W7…
So I removed the working (??) version I had on my PC and started from scratch…
New installation, new C++ extensions installation and so on…
At the end I was able to install PIO in its latest version…
Anyway I still have something to set and refine because I’m NOT able to upload the code on the ARDUINO using the OLD PIO.ini file…
I had to check a few things and maybe I will reach the end of this nightmare…
I’m sorry for what I wrote before about PIO that seems to work properly now…

Interesting. So even VSCode 1.70.2 can have the latest PlatformIO VSCode extension version installed?

I’ve read about https://github.com/i486/VxKex as an extension of the Windows 7 kernel to be able to run applications meant for Windows 8, 8.1 and 10. Maybe the very latest VSCode version 1.101.2 even runs with this, when using the VSCode portable ZIP?

Maybe you didn’t reinstall some USB-to-serial converter driver like for CH340 or CP2102? Let us know the error message if you’re still stuck.
