Bootloop when trying to debug esp32 with custom partitions scheme on arduino framework

Hello Everyone. I am trying to debug an esp firebeetle using the esp-prog and the PIO debugger while using a custom partition scheme and the esp enters a boot loop every time.

The debugger for the most part (under normal configurations), works fine, stopping on the breakpoints and everything else.
The usb driver is also OK, and i can start the debugging process as normally, so decided to run the following experiments to determine what works and whatnot.

I made a really simple program with a counter on the loop function.

  • ESP-Devkits-V4. No custom partitions. Arduino framework: WORKS
  • Firebeetle. No custom partitions. Arduino framework: WORKS
  • Firebeetle. board_build.partitions = default.csv. Arduino framework: WORKS
  • Firebeetle. board_build.partitions = default_8MB.csv, Arduino framework: DOESNT WORK
  • Firebeetle. board_build.partitions = default_16MB.csv, Arduino framework: DOESNT WORK

Partitions are correctly calculated, and they work outside the Debugger.

At this point, i wanted to try if on espidf debugging works. So i made a quick program with an incrementing counter, and gave it a go.

  • ESP-Devkits-V4. No custom partitions. IDF framework: WORKS

  • Firebeetle. No custom partitions. IDF framework: WORKS

  • Firebeetle. custom partitions with IDF. WORKS

    but to get the custom partitions working you need to add these 3 lines lines in the platformio.ini
    board_upload.flash_size = 8MB
    board_upload.maximum_size = 8388608
    board_build.partitions = default_8MB.csv

  • Firebeetle. custom partitions 16mb with IDF. WORKS

At this point i went back to the arduino frame work to add the same extra lines on platformio.ini and see, that maybe this was the cause.
But no, it will still get into a boot loop with the debugger active, and the program will crash. Any ideas what may be the issue?

Does this mean if you instead do a normal “Upload” that is e.g. using the serial uploader, the firmware works? Just that when you debug the project it crashes?

I mean that the application otherwise works, everything compiles and flashes succefully and the partitions are correctly aligned. I initially started the debug process on the actuall application that i was trying to debug, and then tried the minor applications with just the counters that i mention on the initial post.

The problem arises only when you are trying to debug using arduino framework and on partitions larger than 4mb total. In that case the application will again compile and upload successfully, but if i try to debug it the cpu will reset continuously with this message: (this is on the the debug terminal)

If you flash an Arduino firmware on the board with a partition table >4MB, does the firmware execute properly or does just debugging not work?

Yes, i have a huge application that is using 3mb of flash (firebeetle has 16mb), with the following partition table and it works without any issues (for months actually)

All off these variations work if i try to debug using the esp-idf framework on platformio

If a firmware with >4MB partition table usage uploads and executes fine using the normal upload method via serial but doesn’t debug correctly, that means the logic for transporting the debug-firmware via JTAG is broken.

Please open a bug issue at Issues · platformio/platform-espressif32 · GitHub so that @valeros can have a look.

You can also locally investigate this by checking the arguments that given to openocd for the several flash images – you’d have to go into your local C:\Users\<user>\.platformio\platforms\espressif32@src-...\builder\ folder and edit the main.py at e.g. after these lines

with Pyhton code to write the openocd_args string array into a file (this output is normally not shown when edebugging).This then gives you the addresses that openOCD is instructed to flash.

You can then build your project and to a “Verbose Upload” (project tasks), or equivalently pio run -t upload -v. This will show the esptool.py invocation with every image name and image address.

If there is a mismatch between those two, the problem is found.

I know that this is way to late, but no. At the end i went full native and used the original framework with arduino as a component. (which was another disaster, but this is another story).
platformio is amazing in general to start but the weirder things you do (ie, needing specific commits of the frameworks and stuff like that), its better to use the oem tools directly, even though they are usually unfriendly.

I have the same issue but with a 4MB flash size on an AZ Delivery dev board. I only enlarged the app partitions bij 64KB to allow a slightly larger program and added an SPIFFS partition for storage. This is my partition table with the same issue:
