AVR debugging with Platformio

I’m loving Platformio as an IDE for avr, but such a pain switching to Windows for Atmel Studio for debug.

Is it possible in theory to debug AVRs with Platformio debugger?

Does the existence of JTAG for example on the Atmega324pb make this any easier?

Or does avarice work well enough with Atemel ICE over debugWire?
